FORT DODGE - Matt Helmers is the dean's professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University, where he has been on the faculty since 2003.

Helmers will be discussing "Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy: What Practices and How Much," at the Farm News Ag Show on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 10:30 a.m.

"We will discuss what kind of practices can be most effective for helping us to reduce downstream nutrient load," he said.

Helmers said his presentation will also focus on nitrates and what practices can be most effective for that and how many practices we need and some discussion on that issue as we move forward; how we are going to get there and what other kind of benefits will be provided by really trying to work toward these goals.

He added his speech will reach out to more than just producers.

"I think anybody involved in agribusiness, anybody interested in water quality related to agriculture, I think that some of our boards of supervisors, I think this is important information for them," he said. "Some of those folks that are involved with drainage infrastructure projects and there may be some discussion relevant to them or opportunities for discussion."

Helmers' research areas include studies on the impact of nutrient management, cropping practices, drainage design and management, and strategic placement of buffer systems on nutrient export from agricultural landscapes. He has a regional Iowa State University Extension program working to increase adoption of practices that have the potential to reduce downstream nutrient export. He served as the nitrogen science team lead on the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy Science Assessment.
