Named Outstanding Young Farmers

By Staff | Mar 6, 2009

Brent and LuAnn Johnson of Manson, were selected national winners at the 53rd annual National Outstanding Young Farmers Awards Congress held Feb. 12-15 in Oregon.

Four national winners were selected from a group of 10 finalists for the award based on their progress in an agricultural career, extent of soil and water conservation practices, and contributions to the well-being of the community, state and nation.

The three other national winners for were from Ohio, New Jersey and Oregon. National winners received a cash award from corporate sponsor John Deere and the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., during National Ag Week in 2010.

Since he began farming eight years ago, Brent Johnson has become a pioneer of new farming methods, conservation practices, and technology.

Implementing a strip till machine has decreased soil erosion and improved water holding efficiency on his 955-acre farm in Iowa.

In addition to raising corn, soybeans and hay, Brent is expanding his Angus and Hereford cow/calf operation and has added both a custom trucking business and a crop consultation company to the operation.

Brent and his wife, LuAnn, are raising three children on the farm: Greg, 16; Matt, 13; and Kaeli, 5.

The NOYF program is sponsored by John Deere, administered by the U.S. Jaycees, and supported by the Outstanding Farmers of America and the National Association of County Agricultural Agents.
