Beef Center sets 2010 beef forum
Iowa State University Extension and the Iowa Beef Center will host a one-day 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, at the Clay County Regional Event Center in Spencer.
The forum is designed for individuals interested in improving cattle handling and productivity. Clinician and rancher, Curt Pate, will be the keynote speaker targeting “Effective Stockmanship and Stewardship.”
Research studies have shown that stresses imposed by handling and transport can have a detrimental effect on weight gain, rumen function, reproductive function, immune system, and profitability.
Pate’s presentation will emphasize ways to increase cattle performance by reducing handling stress. At the conclusion of the forum, he will conduct a live demonstration with cattle at the Spencer Livestock Sale Barn.
Additional speakers and topics at the forum include:
- Dr. John Lawrence, director of the Iowa Beef Center, speaking on the new era of higher prices and costs.
- Brian Waddingham, from the Iowa Beef Industry Council; and Dennis DeWitt, ISU beef specialist, speaking on animal care and welfare.
- ISU beef specialists Darrell Busby and Daryl Strohbehn discussing animal disposition traits and impacts of genetics.
Costs for the beef forum are sponsored primarily through sponsorships; however, there is a $10 fee to offset the meal expense.
