Wants local control

By Staff | Mar 5, 2010

To the editor:

Approximately 2 million Iowans are being ignored by the Iowa Legislature. Nearly two-thirds of Iowans favor allowing counties to decide where large-scale livestock operations can be located.

The Iowa Democrat Party platform supports local control for CAFO siting, maintenance and operations. Gov. Culver supports local control of CAFO siting.

Our legislators often tell us that their No. 1 job is to represent their constituents. It is clear they are listening more to special interest groups than the people of Iowa – the people they are supposed to represent.

The fact is the people of Iowa want local control of CAFO siting.

We expect responsibility and accountability from students, employees and others we deal with every day. To preserve democracy, we must hold our elected representatives accountable and expect them to be responsible to the 2 million Iowans they have been ignoring.

All Iowans need to do their part to preserve democracy. Contact legislators now. Tell them we are tired of the legislature deliberately disregarding Iowans who want local control of CAFO siting.
