Iowa ethanol plant fined for violations

By Staff | Apr 23, 2010

DES MOINES (AP) – An ethanol plant in central Iowa has been fined $176,750 for air and water pollution violations.

The penalty was levied against Nevada-based Lincolnway Energy LLC for violations between 2006 and 2008. The state attorney general’s office says it is believed to be the largest-ever fine for an Iowa biofuels plant. Lincolnway already has paid the fine.

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Lincolnway emitted excess air pollutants among other violations.

Lincolnway President Rick Brehm says the problems have been fixed. Brehm says the company ”worked hard” to reach a resolution. Iowa attorney general Tom Miller said in a statement that the company cooperated to resolve and correct the situation.
