Northey win is good for Iowa

By Staff | Dec 2, 2010

Now that the election returns have been tabulated, it’s a good time to reflect on the significance for Iowa’s agricultural economy of an extremely important electoral decision.

The overwhelming vote of confidence Hawkeye State voters gave to incumbent Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey is a well-deserved endorsement of the wise policies he has pursued during his first term in office. The election of a Republican governor and many more legislators who understand both agriculture and business should enhance Northey’s ability to turn his vision for Iowa agriculture into reality.

Iowa’s secretary of agriculture plays an important role in helping evolve an agricultural strategy that can keep the Hawkeye state’s rural economy the envy of the world.

During his campaign, Northey stressed the development and promotion of renewable energy. He also championed strongly the protection of our state’s natural resources.

Those are exactly the right priorities and should be at the heart of Northey’s game plan for a second term.

Northey is also committed to strengthening the worldwide marketing of Iowa products. He understands the importance of exports to this state’s economy. Northey has pledged to work closely with Iowa’s new governor, Terry Branstad, to improve the state’s position in the global marketplace.

“Iowa enjoys a great reputation around the world,” Northey said soon after the election reflecting on the challenges that lie ahead. “But we still have to go where they are and bring them here.”

That commitment to marketing is precisely on target.

So too is a drive to improve the environment for business.

American manufacturers and producers of agricultural goods have sometimes been hampered by frivolous regulatory requirements that drive up costs and inhibit competitiveness.

Recognizing the potentially negative impact of regulatory policies, Northey is determined to work closely with Branstad and the Legislature to evaluate how to balance needed government oversight with facilitating an environment in which businesses can flourish.

Voters have chosen wisely in keeping Bill Northey at the helm of one of our state’s most vital departments. He has the vision and talent to be a major contributor as Iowans work to energize the state’s rural economy.

That’s very good news indeed.
