NW Iowa plant lays off 49 workers
HAWARDEN (AP) – Forty-nine workers have been laid off at a lamb slaughter plant in northwest Iowa. Workers at the Superior Foods plant in Hawarden were let go on May 11.
Company spokeswoman Angela Gentry said the cuts target the harvesting portion of the operation. The sheep industry is short of supply, she said.
The plant also let 32 workers go from its processing plant in February. The company said about 15 people will continue to work at its livestock buying and selling operations in Hawarden and a nearby facility that produces animal food.
