Britt Draft Horse Show set for Sept. 2, 3, 4
BRITT – The 30th annual Britt Draft Horse Show will be held at the Hancock County Fairgrounds in Britt on Sept. 2, 3 and 4. The show will feature 18 of the finest six-horse hitches in the United States and Canada, representing the best of the Belgian, Percheron and Clydesdale performance horses. Crews and horses will travel to Britt from homes in Colorado, Minnesota, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Iowa and Nova Scotia, Canada.
The grandstand shows, held Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m., provide two to three hours of entertainment for all ages. Competition is held in the men’s and ladies cart, team, unicorn, four-horse and six-horse hitch classes. At the Sunday afternoon show, the Supreme Six-horse hitch is chosen and all 18 six-horse hitches return to the arena at once in the Classic Series Six-Horse hitch class. The weekend events also include junior classes, a driving competition, eight-horse hitch class and halter classes.
On exhibition at the 2011 Britt Draft Horse Show will be “Old Betsy,” a 1883 Silsby steam engine owned and restored by the Chariton Volunteer Fire Department. The Chariton Volunteer Fire Department has owned Old Betsy since 1883 and spent four years restoring the fire pumper. It is one of just three steam engines of its type still in existence in the United States and the only one of its type not housed in a museum.
The Britt Draft Horse Show is one of the recognized qualifying shows for the North American Six-Horse Hitch Classic Series. Each year, more than 175 six-horse hitches from across the United States and Canada compete at state and county fairs and agricultural exhibitions throughout North America to accumulate points for the Classic Series. At the end of the series, the four highest in each of three breed classifications are invited to compete at the North American Six-Horse Hitch Classic Series Final Championship.
Admission for Friday is $2 for adults and $1 for children. Admission for Saturday and Sunday is $8 for adults, $1 for children 6 through 12, and children age 5 and under are free.
