Farm News’ Ag Show set for Nov. 30-Dec. 1 run

Farm News is hosting its 10th anniversary Ag Show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Wednesday, and from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, at the Career Education Building on the Iowa Central Community College campus, Fort Dodge.

More than 70 exhibitors from Iowa and surrounding states will showcase their latest state-of-the-art technology in grain products, equipment, ag services, seed varieties and farm toys.

Parking is free and there is no admission charge to the show.

Those attending the show can register to win a four-day, three-night trip for two to Las Vegas, Nev.

Hotel accommodations are with the Wynn Las Vegas and flight accommodations will be through Delta in Fort Dodge. Travel date options will be either Feb. 12 to 15 or March 4 to 7, 2012, subject to change based on availability.

The vacation package is sponsored by Intelliair of Garden City, Mo., and Farm News.

Those attending the show can also register to win a 4,000 psi Bobcat cold water pressure washer, valued at more than $1,600.

Speaker corps

The Ag Show has scheduled six speakers during the two-day event. These include:

  • Adam Wirt, POET regional biomass coordinator, who will speak from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Nov. 30.

He’ll discuss “Beyond the Kernel: Stover Strategies for Biofuel Production What We’ve Learned. Five years of experience in crop residue supply development.”

Wirt’s appearance is sponsored by POET Biorefining-Gowrie.

  • Dr. Harold Prior, executive director of Iowa Wind Energy Association, who will speak from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 30.

He’ll discuss “The Small Wind Turbine Market: Tips for Prospective Owners.”

The presentation will provide an overview of the small wind turbine market, the variety of turbines in the market and the steps that people interested in buying a small wind turbine should take before agreeing to purchase a wind turbine.

  • Elwinn Taylor, Iowa State University agricultural meteorologist, who will speak from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 30.

He’ll discuss “Will 2012 be more of the same?” The La Nina gave folks across the Corn Belt plenty to wonder about in 2011, and now the chance of another La Nina winter is looming larger.

Taylor will discuss the risks from the weather expected during 2012.

  • David Kruse, president of CommStock Investments, of Royal, and author of The CommStock Report, who will speak from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 1.

He’ll discuss “The Agricultural Eagle In the Flock of Turkeys can the Ag Sector Keep Flying High?”

Kruse’s appearance is sponsored by United Bank of Iowa, Fort Dodge.

  • Karen Schwaller, Farm News humorist and farm wife, at 11 a.m. to noon, on Dec. 1.

In the same vein as her columns in Farm News, Schwaller will offer humorous takes on farm life in general.

Schwaller is also compiling her columns into a book.

  • Kendall R. Lamkey, chairman of ISU’s agronomy department, who will speak from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 1

He’ll discuss “Prospects and Challenges to Raising a 300-Bushel Corn Crop.”

Lamkey’s appearance is sponsored by Brokaw Supply, Fort Dodge.

Readers from across 33 counties in northwest and north central Iowa will have a chance to meet face-to-face with more than 70 exhibitors.

Lunch is available on-site by the Webster County Pork Producers from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., on Nov. 30; and by the Webster County Beef Producers from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., on Dec. 1.

Meals will be served by the Fort Dodge Area Chamber of Commerce Ag Relations Task Force with the help of Iowa Central Community College agricultural students.

There will be a free pancake breakfast for the first 525 guests from 7:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., on Dec. 1.

The breakfast is catered by Chris Cakes and is sponsored by Lundell Plastics, Odebolt.
