Britt set for annual draft horse show Sept. 1-2

BRITT – Eighteen six-horse hitches from the United States and Canada will gather for the 31st annual Britt Draft Horse Show, beginning Friday.

The show features the best of Belgian, Percheron and Clydesdale performance horses from seven states and Novia Scotia.

The grandstand shows, held at 2 p.m. on?Sept. 1 and Sept. 2, will provide two to three hours of entertainment. Competition is held in the men’s and ladies’ crt, team, unicorn, four-horse hitch and six-horse hitch classes.

At the Sunday show, the supreme six-horse hitch is chosen, and all 18 six-horse hitches return to the arena at once in the classic series six-horse hitch class. The weekend events also include junior classes, a six-horse driving competition, eight-horse hitch class and halter classes.

The Britt Draft Horse Show is one of the recognized qualifying shows for the North American Six-Horse Hitch Class Series.

Each year, more than 175 six- horse hitches from across the United States and Canada compete at state and county fairs and agricultural exhibitions throughout North America to accumulate points for the Classic Series.

At the end of the series, the four highest point hitches in each of three breed classifications are invited to compete at the North American Six-Horse Hitch Classic Series Final Championship.

The show was first organized in 1982 by a group of local draft horse enthusiasts.

The Hancock County Fairgrounds open at 7 a.m. each day, and the public is welcome to come early and wander through the barns and visit with the crews.

Spectators are also welcome to visit the commercial building with booths offering T-shirts, belt buckles, model hitches, ceramics and gift items, paintings and prints, livestock equipment and more.

Food and camping facilities are available on the grounds.

Admission for Friday is $2 for adults, $1 for children ages 6 through 12 and children 5 and under are admitted free. Admission for Saturday and Sunday is $8 for adults, $1 for children and those 5 and under are admitted free.
