Harvesting his 66th crop

By Staff | Sep 26, 2012

Mike Longnecker, driving combine, and Augie Nelson, operating tractor, worked together on the soybean harvest on Nelson’s farm near Iowa Center in Story County. Nelson, 87, said he has been farming since he took his military discharge in 1946, which makes this his 66th crop. Longnecker, Nelson’s son-in-law, works at John Deere in Ankeny, and assists out on the farm occasionally. Nelson said he wasn’t sure what his yields were for soybeans, but his corn averaged about 160 bushels per acre. This soybean field was the last of his fields to be combined.
