Hardin County slates beef feeder pen weigh-in

IOWA FALLS – Those interested in learning about marketing cattle, can participate in the market beef feeder pen class during the 2014 Hardin County Fair.

The beef feeder weigh-in is set for Jan. 17 and 18 at any county certified weigh scale. Participants must contact the Hardin County Extension office at (641) 648-4850 prior to calves being weighed and be present at time of weighing.

Sponsorships are available. Youth will learn about pricing, rate of gain, meat quality and how one can improve the way calves are raised.

The feeder pen project allows 4-H’ers to bring four to 10 calves to the fair without grooming or showing them in the arena.

They calves are judged based on rate of gain and meat quality.

A judge will talk with each 4-H’er and explain how their pen was ranked and ways to improve.

The weather make-up dates will be Jan. 24 and 25.
