Ames sets crop advantage meeting
AMES – Iowa State University Extension’s Crop Advantage Series will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Jan. 13, at the Quality Inn and Suites in Ames and will be hosted by Extension field agronomists Mark Johnson and Angie Rieck-Hinz.
“Crop Advantage Series brings the latest crop production information from Iowa State University Extension,” said Johnson. “Each location features key statewide topics as well as a program developed by your ISU field agronomists for central Iowa.”
John Sawyer, an ISU Extension soil fertility specialist, is one of the morning’s keynote speakers. Sawyer will discuss nitrogen recommendations for optimizing economic return and water quality.
Jamie Benning, an Extension water quality program manager, will present “Opportunities for Local Watershed Improvement,” outlining the nutrient reduction strategy.
Workshop sessions include
- Maturity and date of planting influence on yield potential, as well as research and management updates on sudden death syndrome, by Leonor Leandro, an ISU Extension plant pathologist.
- New information on grain storage and discussion on current issues with export markets by Charles Hurburgh, an Extension ag engineer.
- Efficient use of phosphorus, potassium, lime and micronutrients with lower crop prices, by ISU Extension soil fertility specialist Antonio Mallarino; plus the management of energy inputs in crop farming and an analysis of 2014 farm bill decisions.
Advance registration (deadline is Monday) is $50 which includes workshop materials, lunch and refreshments.
Registration after Monday or at the door is $60.
Certified crop advisors can obtain up to five CEU credits.
The fee for the CCA credits is included in the registration cost.
Private pesticide applicators will be able to obtain their continuing instructional course credits at this meeting.
The cost for the private pesticide applicator certification is included in the registration fee.
