Cow-calf producer workshop set Thursday
IOWA FALLS – Tools to Improve and Grow Your Cow-Calf Operation is the theme of a cow-calf producer workshop being held from 9:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Ellsworth College Agriculture and Renewable Energy Center south of Iowa Falls.
The workshop emphasis will be on genetic selection and genomics. Producers will learn how to use these tools to make genetic improvements in their herd.
Pat Wall, ISU Extension beef specialist, will speak on applying selection indexes and genomic tools. Representatives from Zoetis will discuss how genetic testing tools they have available can be used in conjunction with vaccination strategies.
Patrick Gunn, ISU beef cow specialist, will discuss the economics of raising or buying replacement heifers and synchronization programs for artificial insemination. Russ Euken, ISU Extension livestock specialist, will discuss alternative cow-calf systems including grazing, confined, and dry lot production.
