Letter from reader
To the editor,
It is with no small amount of disgust that I read the articles and hear the radio ads promoting lawsuits against Syngenta for selling their fully legal corn trait.
Yes, I suppose there will be farmers who jump on this litigation bandwagon, as it’s billed as a no-risk opportunity for the farmer to put a few bucks in his pocket, and even our former Iowa Secretary of Agriculture is now endorsing it.
But the negative effects of the MIR-162 release on the markets is debatable, and the real blame here lies with China.
I don’t believe for one minute that China thought there was a real risk with this product, but capitalized on the opportunity to enforce an artificial trade barrier for their farmers, and seized the chance to negotiate better terms from their foreign suppliers.
The MIR-162 trait was approved by virtually every market in the world, and blaming Syngenta for China’s hi jinx is simply opportunism by another pack of lawyers trying to make a name and a buck for themselves.
