Evening garden tour, food tastings set Tuesday
ROCK RAPIDS – An evening garden and food tasting tour hosted by Iowa State Extension is set at 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 21 at the Lyon County Fair Grounds gardens in Rock Rapids.
In addition, a separate children’s “Pizza Garden” tour is set at 5:30 p.m. and is part of ISU Extension’s 4-H youth development’s children’s gardening curriculum called “Growing in the Garden.”
Visitors will experience a horticulture tour and taste locally sourced food. “A local master gardener will demonstrate growing vegetables using straw bales. This is a great opportunity to learn about this popular idea of straw bale gardening,” said Margaret Murphy, Lyon County ISU Extension horticulturist.
“This year’s theme for all of the garden field days is ‘Gardens of North and South America,'” said Cynthia Haynes, associate professor in horticulture at Iowa State University.
“Food tastings at the Lyon County Fair Grounds will feature ‘salad on a stick’ made from delicious, locally grown vegetables,” Haynes said. “Later field days, held in September, will highlight vegetables from the two continents.”
Murphy and Josh Sievers, superintendent at the ISU Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm, will be available for questions during the tour.
The Lyon County Fair Grounds are located at South Fifth Avenue and Tama Street in Rock Rapids. From state Highway 9, turn on Tama Street and continue south three blocks. From state Highway 75, turn on South 5th Avenue and continue eight blocks east to the fair grounds.
Sponsors of this no-cost annual event are the Lyon County Master Gardeners and the Lyon County 4-H clubs.
