Small-space gardening workshop set

By Staff | May 28, 2016

ROCK RAPIDS – Iowa State University Extension will host a vegetable gardening for small spaces workshop on from 9:30 a.m. to noon June 11, at the ISU Demonstration Garden on the Lyon County Fairgrounds in Rock Rapids.

The workshop, which is the first event of the summer 2016 Garden to Table Series, will focus on how to grow more with less space.

“I always encourage people to vegetable garden,” Margaret Murphy, a horticulture educator with ISU Extension, said. “I think it is good for the person, the planet and the pocketbook.

“Occasionally, someone will tell me that they do not have enough room for a veggie garden. Not one to be discouraged, I would like to share some space-saving tips for growing vegetables in a small area.”

Through hands-on projects, participants will learn about inter-planting, succession planting, how to grow vegetables with vertical garden trellises, and how to use containers and raised beds when they are limited for space.

There will be a follow up workshop entitled, “Cooking with Garden Vegetables” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Forster Community Center in Rock Rapids.

Both events are free and open to the public; however, pre-registration is requested.

To pre-register or for more information, contact Murphy at (712) 472-2576.
