Specialists to discuss ISU research projects

SUTHERLAND – An opportunity to listen to Iowa State University Extension specialists present timely research and crop production information will begin at 9 a.m. July 13 at the ISU Northwest Research and Demonstration Farm, 6320 500th St. near Sutherland.

Speakers, all ISU field specialists, will include:

A). Paul Kassel on agronomic topics.

B). Antonio Mallarino on the surface runoff project.

C). Alison Robertson on the outlook for corn diseases.

D). Gary Wright on the ag economy.

“The field day will give farmers and the public a chance to see current research projects, and talk with the researchers involved in the experiments,” said Joel DeJong, an ISU Extension field agronomist in northwest Iowa. “Attendees will also be able to hear about the latest research and crop management information in the agriculture industry.

Lunch will be provided by Iowa Learning Farms, with an update on the Nutrient Reduction Strategy to follow.

Matt Helmers, an ISU agricultural engineer, will discuss the new tile study project at the research farm. Participants will have the opportunity to take a tour of that project.

The field day will end with a short session on how to take nitrate samples, and everyone will be able to take home a nitrate test kit to sample their own tile water.

The afternoon will conclude with homemade ice cream.
