Le Mars preparing round barn for Plymouth County fair
LE MARS – In recognition of the Plymouth County Fair celebrating its 75th anniversary, the Le Mars Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee is presenting “Agriculture: Technical Advances Through The Ages,” as part of the overall agriculture education exhibit of the “aROUND the farm in the BARN” to be on display in the famous round barn during the Plymouth County Fair, July 27 through July 31.
“This marks the third year for the Chamber Agriculture Committee and the Plymouth County Fair Board to showcase agriculture in the famous landmark building,” said Cole Sitzmann, chairman of the Le Mars Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee. “Visitors to this year’s fair will notice a different display than what has been featured during the first two years .”
In the lower level of the round barn, people will experience a walk through agricultural history as they will see seven different Plymouth County farmers share their story about the various means of advances in technology.
“The exhibit shows how the mounted corn picker introduced in the late 1940s and early 1950s was a labor-saving invention, allowing farmers to expand their farming operations, since they no longer needed to harvest corn by hand,” Sitzmann said. “Another display shows the advancements in tractor technology.
“Again, allowing local farmers to farm more ground with more horsepower. We even show how farmers today are utilizing modern technology with such devices as an I-pad tablet, computers, global positioning systems, and drones.”
The 2016 agricultural education exhibit features several “hands-on” interactive exhibits allowing children to learn more about agriculture.
“New this year will be a model grain distribution system,” Sitzmann said, “complete with augers, and grain elevators.
“Children will be able to see how exactly a grain system, found on many farms, moves grain.”
Lundell Plastics, of Odebolt, created this interactive exhibit.
People who visit this year’s Round Barn agricultural educational display will see how planters have advanced through the years.
On display will be an antique two-row planter, complete with check wire.
