Strengthening Families; Bringing youth, parents together

By Staff | Aug 8, 2016

ALGONA – Youth are facing more pressures now than ever before; and the Strengthening Families Program 10-14 can help prepare families for all of the expected and unexpected forces your child will face.

The overall goal of Strengthening Families Program 10-14 is to help families communicate better with each other and to help youth learn to communicate effectively with their peers.

Algona and Bishop Garrigan sixth-graders and their families may attend this free, seven-part program, each night from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., starting Sept., 6 and running each Tuesday and Thursday through Sept. 22.

The first hour consists of parents and youth learning separately and the second hour joining together with each other to discuss and practice what they learned.

To graduate, families must attend five of the seven sessions.

Past participants have had the following to say about the program:

A). This is a good program to get to know your child better and help each other relate to each other better.

B). This is a good program for opening lines of communication between kids and parents before kids get to the age where they won’t talk to their parents anymore.

C). I would recommend this program to all families! Even if you think you, “don’t need it.”

A free meal will be served to families at 5 p.m., followed by the program.

Each session is free to participating families and includes free childcare for siblings.

To enroll, contact Faye Schluter, at Kossuth County Extension office at (515) 295-2469.
