7,490-head facility approved in Humboldt County

HUMBOLDT – Thousands more hogs are coming to Humboldt County.

Two building permits for livestock confinements were considered by the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors Sept. 19.

Peacock Farms LLC, of Iowa Falls, will be adding a new hog confinement with the capacity of 7,490 head, five miles south of Ottosen.

Supervisors approved the construction permit for the new livestock confinement.

The facility will be located near the intersection of Humboldt County Road P20 and 155th Street, according to Melody Larson, Humboldt County zoning administrator.

Also on Monday, the Supervisors denied another permit on a second hog confinement for Brookglade Farms LLC, of Iowa Falls.

That confinement was to be located between 160th Street and Humboldt County Road P19 to the north and west of Bradgate.

The location is close to Bradgate city limits.

The Supervisors will reconsider that permit at a later date.

“We had some concerns,” Jerry Haverly, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, said. “We just want to send it back through to have these concerns addressed.”

Denial was recommended by the board of adjustment for three reasons.

A). Lack of a site survey included in the application submitted to the county by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

B). Concerns that the increase in the number of animals could potentially affect the ground and surface water quality in the Des Moines River.

C). The site’s location adjacent to the city limits of Bradgate.

Haverly said the permit could eventually pass.

“We want to at least state those concerns and have them looked at,” Haverly said.

Brookglade Farms LLC plans to increase an existing facility from 2,490 head to 5,000 head.
