Rastetter as U.S. SecAg? No

To the editor:

It would be a big mistake for President-elect Donald Trump to nominate Bruce Rastetter as the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.

Yes, it has always been a feather in Iowa’s cap to have an Iowan appointed to the President’s cabinet. However, Rastetter would not have our best interests in mind.

For example, Rastetter and his brother have no respect for Palo Alto County’s Good Neighbor Policy – created in 1997 to help protect the interests of the farmers and landowners near corporate hog lots by establishing a distance of one-half mile between corporate lots and neighboring houses.

It is not an enforceable regulation, but it is a policy that our county tries to maintain. We can proudly say that 96 percent of all the hog producers that have built hog buildings in Palo Alto County since its creation have abided by the policy.

In contrast, Bruce Rastetter and his brother – through their company, Summit Farms – continue to blatantly disregard the policy and build their hog buildings within one-half mile of their neighbors.

How can we expect Rastetter to represent the interests of the nation’s farmers when he can’t even treat our own state’s citizens with any respect?
