Youth Beef Conference set
IOWA FALLS – An educational program sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and Ellsworth Community College for North Central Iowa youth who want to learn more about beef production will be held Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Ellsworth Community College Agriculture & Renewable Energy Center, south of Iowa Falls on U.S. Highway 65 at 705 Ellsworth Ave.

The program will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with registration beginning at 9 a.m. in the Equine Center.
A variety of interactive workshops and sessions are being planned for youths from fourth grade through 12th grade who register for this event.
Youths will learn what’s involved with producing high quality beef.
Amy Powell, an ISU Extension animal science and 4-H specialist, will teach youth the science behind how humans taste food.
Russ Euken, an ISU Extension livestock specialist, will explain what the new Veterinary Feed Directive is and how it effects 4-H youth involved with raising livestock.
Lori Hardman, Hardin County Extension youth coordinator, and Kimberly Booth, Franklin County Extension after-school coordinator, will engage youths in discovering the differences in different types of raised beef.
Kevin Butt, an associate professor ao agriculture at Ellsworth Community College, will teach youths what to look for when evaluating a class of beef heifers and market steers as a part of a beef skill-a-thon.
4-H youths that attend will be able to get their Food Safety Quality Assurance certification for the current year. FSQA certification is a requirement for 4-H members that wish to exhibit livestock at the Iowa State Fair as well as county and regional fairs.
The cost to attend is $5 per person. Parents are welcome to stay. Preregister by Jan. 17 at a local ISU Extension office, or send registration fee and information to the Franklin County Extension office, 3 First Ave NW, Hampton, IA 50441.
