Hardin County sets 4-H beef feeder pen weigh-in
IOWA FALLS – Hardin County 4-H members interested in learning about marketing cattle should think about participating in the market beef feeder pen class. Sponsorships are available, if needed.
Youths will learn about pricing, rate of gain, meat quality and how to improve the way calves are raised. The feeder pen project allows 4-H’ers to bring four to 10 calves to the fair without grooming or showing them in the arena.
They are judged based on rate of gain and quality of meat. A judge will talk with each 4-H’er and explain how their pen was ranked and ways to improve.
This is a great learning experience for those interested in raising cattle in the future.
Weigh-in will take place Jan. 19 through 21 during certified scale hours at any approved scale in Hardin County (in order for scale tickets to be obtained).
Weather make-up days are Jan. 26 and 27.
Contact the Extension office by Jan. 13 to express intentions to weigh-in calves for the feed pen competition.
Extension staff must know of those calves to be weighed and be present at time of weighing, no exceptions.
