FORT DODGE – Kelvin Leibold, farm and ag business management specialist at Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, will be the first speaker to kick off the 16th annual Farm News Ag Show.

Leibold’s presentation, “Global agriculture what’s happening next,” will be held at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6

“I will discuss what’s happening in agriculture as far as who’s profitable, why they are profitable,” he said.

Leibold also said will also present on agriculture across the world.

“We will talk a little bit about what’s going on in the world globally,” he said. “What’s happening with China, Argentina and Brazil.”

Leibold will also discuss environmental compliance – not only in our state, but hopes to provide some information on what other countries are doing for their environment.

Ag technology – what is new in that arena – and a large topic; risk management, is also planned for Leibold’s presentation.

“Risk management is another thing we need to understand,” he said. “The risk management tools for Iowa farmers has changed dramatically in the last four years. I’m not sure how we are going to deal with that new risk, but to me, that’s one of the things we need to think about, is how do I deal not just with weather risk, but how do I deal with financial risk? How do I deal with this price risk? That is going to be huge for us.”

Leibold said he also hopes to take a look at the new ag policy and farm bill as well.

Who should attend?

Besides producers, Leibold thinks lenders as well as land owners could benefit from his presentation.

“They might be interested in getting an idea a little bit on the outlook of what is going on in the rest of the world,” he said.

Leibold has 30 years of experience with ISU Extension. His areas of expertise include farm management, farmland and building leasing, global agriculture, land values, farm machinery management, estate planning, intergenerational transfer and beginning farmers.

He is a member of the Annie’s Project national leadership team and has observed agriculture in Brazil, China, India, Nigeria, Paraguay, Russia, South Africa, Thailand and western Europe.

This included setting up a pork genetics project in Nigeria and ongoing work with Agri-Benchmark from Germany. Leibold has presented at the AGRITECHNICA machinery show in Germany, as well as many of the countries he has traveled to.

Leibold has a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in agricultural education from Iowa State University.
