Iowa does well in national study

By Staff | Dec 22, 2017

24/7 Wall St. LLC is a Delaware corporation that runs a financial news and opinion company. For eight years, it has annually reviewed economic indicators, budget allocations, balance sheets and assorted social measures to evaluate – and rank – each of the 50 American states in terms of how-well-run they are.

In the most recent 24/7 Wall St. study, which was published Dec. 6, Iowa ranks an impressive No. 3 in the nation. It is only bested by Minnesota, which the authors put in the top spot, and Utah, which they say is No. 2.

Under the strong leadership of Gov. Kim Reynolds and her predecessor, Gov. Terry Branstad, Iowa has repeatedly done well in these rankings. This year it moved up to No. 3 from a still highly praiseworthy No. 6 a year ago.

The study’s analysts ranked states using four criteria: unemployment, pension funded ratio, credit rating and outlook, and poverty.

Iowa’s 17-year low unemployment rate of 3.7 percent, its strong state pension fund, AAA credit rating and low poverty rate (11.8 percent) all contributed to the Hawkeye State’s high ranking.

Here is some of what the study had to say about Iowa:

“Iowa is also one of the most fiscally responsible states in the country. While across all states, average state government debt amounts to 52.2 percent of total state tax revenue, Iowa’s debt load amounts to just 26.1 percent – one of the smallest shares in the country. Additionally, Iowa’s rainy day funds could cover about 10 percent of the state’s 2018 fiscal year budget, slightly better than the average across all states.”

Both the Reynolds and Branstad administrations have put a strong emphasis on prudent management of the state’s economy and finances. The 24/7 Wall St. findings are powerful evidence that those priorities are producing excellent results.

Farm News takes pride in the Iowa’s superb status as one of the best-run of the 50 states. Our current governor, her predecessor and the members of the Legislature who have supported them all deserve our thanks. Working together, they are helping our state succeed grandly.
